GREAT WINES CROSS STATE LINES
There are 2,933 acres of planted vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA), which spans Southeastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon.
The top five varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (36%), Syrah (18%), Merlot (16%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Malbec (4%). Within the Walla Walla Valley AVA lies The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, which was approved in early 2015. The distinguishing feature of The Rocks District is its soil, which consists primarily of dark-colored basalt cobblestones. Syrah accounts for almost half of the planted vineyards (45%), and Cabernet Sauvignon is second (24%).
Vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley will continue to expand for years to come, further positioning it as one of the top wine grape growing regions in the world.
