Two family legacies rolled into one

WHAT’S IN A NAME: GIFFORD HIRLINGER

Gifford Hirlinger is a small family owned estate winery located in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley. Established in 2001 by the Berghan family, we have dedicated ourselves to producing exceptional wines with a true sense of “place” through the use of sustainable farming practices and a hands-off winemaking style.

While Gifford Hirlinger doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, the name has significant meaning for the Berghans. They aren’t originally from the Walla Walla Valley, but when they moved here to start the winery 24 years ago, they discovered that on both sides of their family, they had direct ancestors born in Walla Walla when they came across the country in covered wagons. On the father’s side of the family, it was the great-great grandfather Gifford, and on the mother’s side, it was the great grandmother Hirlinger. It’s a little bit of local and family history all rolled into one!
