WHAT’S IN A NAME: CAVU CELLARS

CAVU Cellars is a family-owned winery in the Airport District of Walla Walla owned by Jim, Karen, and Joel Waite. It features a beautiful tasting room, a vibrant art gallery, and a large event space.

When we were brainstorming names, many pages of potential names were contemplated, so when we came across the acronym CAVU, we knew we had found our winner. CAVU is an old WWII acronym that stands for Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited. In essence, it means a great day to go flying.

The winery’s name, CAVU Cellars, is an homage to the Walla Walla areas history during WWII and Jim’s military career as an Army pilot. The Walla Walla Airport District was home to hundreds of B-17 and B-24 bombers during WWII and many of the original buildings have been remodeled and repurposed. CAVU was also the military call sign for the San Jacinta Aircraft carrier in WWII that was home to many famous pilots.

We regularly get comments and phone calls from people about how the term CAVU resonates with them, so we are very proud and honored to have made it part of our brand identity.
