WHAT’S IN A NAME: MOONBASE
Where did “Moonbase” come from? Drew, our Owner and Winemaker, has always been fascinated by outer space. Though he never studied the topic formally, his free time is often spent listening to podcasts, reading books, or watching videos on the topic.
We knew we wanted a “space-themed” winery because we had some fun marketing ideas and stories that we wanted to tell. First we came up with Moonlapse – a blend of the phases of the moon—and used that for our everyday red blend. We also started the Max Q Series for our wines from the Rocks AVA. Max Q is used to describe the point at which a rocket is under the most stress during ascent. Likewise, the vines that grow in the Rock AVA are under lots of stress, too. Lastly, our G.S.M. we call “The LGM” G.S.M. which is short for Little Green Men. This was the name given to the very first pulsar ever discovered, and a story we love to feature when pouring the G.S.M in our tasting room.
We thought in choosing something simple and familiar, it would be easy to remember. As a new winery in the Walla Walla Valley, we hoped to get referrals from more established wineries, and wanted to pick something that would stick in people’s minds. We’ve also had a ton of fun building and creating the brand, and love when customers give us ideas or suggestions in the tasting room – with a space themed winery, there’s really no limit.
